May We Worship

by Kelly Crawford

“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.”  C.S. Lewis

“God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.” C.S. Lewis

“If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”  C.S. Lewis

“For when we cease to worship God, we do not worship nothing, we worship anything.”  GK Chesterton

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.”  GK Chesterton

“It is not what a man does that determines whether his work is sacred or secular, it is why he does it.  The motive is everything.” A.W. Tozer

“Now, worship is the missing jewel in modern evangelicalism. We’re organized; we work; we have our agendas. We have almost everything, but there’s one thing that the churches, even the gospel churches, do not have: that is the ability to worship. We are not cultivating the art of worship.”  A. W. Tozer

I am reading these to my husband as we are just off to bed.We are not feeling the want to be at our church but still the need to be apart of a christian comunity and to worship together.

Hello all,
I was just wondering if any of you all ever feel defeated. I am a stay at home mom who also homeschools our two little boys ages 4 and 2 for about 4 to 5 hours a day 5 days a week. I sometimes feel so defeated that i will never get caught up on any task. I have so many TO DO list and To be done later list that i never feel im going to finish any of it. My husband works about 50 hours a week but soon will be working from home full time so that i will love so much. I sometimes find myself skipping school to get TO Do’s caught up. I know i should’nt do that but its just such a jugleing act. Well just my thoughts for the day. Sorry about rambling just wanted to see if any of you ever feel that way. Kelly maybe you could write a blog about playing the catch up game.

Blessings
Kasey

I’m sure the experienced women will offer you tips. But in the meantime, two resources I recommend are “Passionate Housewives” and a CD “24 Hours is all You Get”.

Kasey,

There isn’t one of us who doesn’t feel overwhelmed from time to time. And there isn’t always an easy answer. The book/CD Jennifer recommended are excellent and I have found that readjusting priorities is most often the best thing.

When I re-read your comment something jumped out at me: “homeschooling your 4 & 2 year old 4-5 hours a day????

I think that may be your saving grace. I know we all have different expectations about homeschooling, but the public school system doesn’t even do this with this age group. They are AT school that long, but they’re not being “schooled” the whole time. Most educational experts agree that the majority of a 4 and 5 year old’s time needs to be spent in creative play and that too much formal, academic efforts can even have an negative effect. I happen to agree with that. I spend very little formal, academic time with my children that age. Reading to them, singing to/with and conversing with them (don’t underestimate this incredible teaching tool!) and playing is the limit of our “schooling” in the early years. So far I have 4 children who read very well and are progressing naturally in school. I don’t start regular “formal” schooling until
around the age of 7, depending on their interest.

What does you “to do list” look like? Are you maintaining a good balance between keeping up with basic household chores and keeping a spotless house? Some women have way too high an expectation for house cleaning while they have little children. Spotlessness can wait.
“Choose the better part” and place your relationships at the top of the list. Of the practical day to day things, try to incorporate even those little ones. Anything you can let them assist you with not only helps with your time, but begins to build an understanding in them of team work and hopefully they will see in you a joyfulness in serving, even when there are things to do that you don’t particularly enjoy.

Kasey, Yes, any one feels overwhelmed/defeated when they are doing more than God has for them. I would ask the Lord what is the appropriate amount of time to spend on home schooling. 4-5 hours a day is what a 4-6th grader would spend (based on my many friends who HS). This is the time to spend relishing silly times with your kids. Playing, laughing, running around. It doesn’t matter how brilliant your child is, their will be a time when their brain reaches a plateau, and they will not be able to consume anymore until their brain develops further. No need to push them now. Now is time to develop their love for learning so they will want to school later. You may be at risk of burning them out (in addition to you) by schooling so much. To do lists come and go. Get done what God is telling you to get done that day. Everything else is cake. You don’t want to look back and not remember the fun times with your kids.
OUT OF ALL MY ADVICE, PLEASE READ THIS THE MOST: Seek God. Ask Him to order your days. When waking each day, ask Him what HE wants you to do. Ask Him to give you a sched for the week, month. When you work within the Lord’s planning/timing, it will be beautiful. (I am not 100% there yet, but I know this is His will for me, and unlike some personalized things He tells me just for me, I am certain everyone will benefit from asking Him what our schedule is to be that day.)
Thanks, Kasey, I just got to preach to me too…..lol, I love it when He does that, for the most part.

Kasey,

We plan on homeschooling too, i have a 4yo and a 3yo. We have no formal homeschooling program right now. I am working on teaching my girls obedience first.

They are by my side all day, when I do laundry they help me sort the dirty clothes, fold wash clothes and towels, and match socks. Matching, sorting and patterns are the primary basics of Math. They are learning some math all while helping keep our house clean, which makes them feel important and needed.

We also cook together, they take in the different smells and textures, which is observing, an important skill in Science 🙂

My girls can also make their beds, unload the dishwasher, wipe down the tables and lower cupboards, wash floors, water the plants, clean windows, polish furniture, wipe down their bathroom sinks, put away laundry that I fold. While we are working together I sing Mother goose rhymes with them and talk to them about God where it relates to what we are doing.

Even in the yard, my kids pick up sticks, rake, water flowers and pull weeds.

It might seem like my kids work a lot, but they really enjoy it, and that’s the point. I want them to associate work with joy. And they learn much more by following me and observing me then they would my spoon feeding information to them.

Also at some point on the weekend when my husband is off work, he plays with the girls for about two hours while I play catch up on some household chores. I can get so much done when it is just me and no interruptions.

I hope you find peace and order in your home, I know it can be so overwhelming sometimes when you don’t have enough hours in the day.

I just wanted to say you all made me cry(good cry). You are all such an inspiration and i will definitely try all those things. Yes i think now that i did put to much on my plate. I will be doing alot of praying for God to arrange my day. I love my babies and want them to enjoy what God has for them to do. Even if its cleaning the bathroom. I know i have to work on myself first for a good example for them.
Thank you all so much for the good advise.
May God Bless you all
Kasey
