Getting to the Heart of Modesty

by Kelly Crawford

Missy, at Somewhere in the Middle posted a great piece about what modesty means…

“Modesty is one of those Jell-O concepts. You try to pick it up, and it squishes fiendishly out between your fingers. 1 Timothy 2:9 commands women to dress modestly, but what does that actually mean when we’re getting dressed in the morning?”

Thanks for the link.

This is a problem that my family is facing now that summer has finally come to Wisconsin. Just this weekend at a family picnic I had a sister and cousin dressed very inappropriately (tiny bikinis). I knew my sister had a habit of doing this and asked her ahead of time to dress modestly (which she said she would, but didn’t). I also pulled my cousin aside and asked her to cover up. I was met with disdain, and both my husband and I are being accused of being perverts because we “noticed” them. My cousin has “threated” to not come to family functions anymore if the “perverts” are going to be there.

I have to admit that I am mad that we are labeled that way by our own family, family that call themselves Christians. It’s ok to come half naked, if you happen to notice and say something, you are a pervert. How about everyone else that noticed and didn’t say anything. They are not perverts because they chose to continue ignoring what was obviously there?

What do we do? (Other than avoid family functions in the summer, which we are contemplating).
