Daughter of feminist author Alice Walker (The Color Purple) says she saw life from a very different worldview, being brought up in the home of a feminist mother. Very enlightening article.
“You see, my mum taught me that children enslave women. I grew up believing that children are millstones around your neck, and the idea that motherhood can make you blissfully happy is a complete fairytale.”
“The ease with which people can get divorced these days doesn’t take into account the toll on children. That’s all part of the unfinished business of feminism.”
“Feminism has betrayed an entire generation of women into childlessness. It is devastating.”
(An interesting note…Alice was the youngest of 8 children. Her mother’s very willingness to bring up children is what even made it possible for Alice to make her mark on the world. But she gives no credit to motherhood, denying her own power given to her from her own mother.

How devastating to know that your own mother would consider you a burden. What a telling article! I’m glad she spoke up!
Wow. That was quite an article. I saved it on my Microsoft Word. It certainly reflects the times I lived in (late ’60’s, early ’70’s). I watched my best friend ruined by feminism. She was given a huge dose of it in college, at the university she attended. She was never the same after that. She is still my best friend…we have just learned not to “push each other’s buttons.” Sad.
I read the whole article, too. In high school I was forced to spend an entire semester studying the works of Alice Walker who was highly revered by my honors English feminist teacher, Ms. Kelly. Alice Walker’s books went against pretty much everything I stood for even back then.
I feel so sad for her daughter, but not surprised. Alice Walker will realize way too late how she wrongly prioritized her life.
Sheena,
That’s a revealing bit of information. That in high school, you were being so strongly shaped by an anti-family, feminist world-view. Let it be a reminder for so many who believe “public school is neutral” or that it doesn’t influence the worldviews of its students. It influences everything!
Such a sad article. I can’t imagine any mother feeling this way about their child.
