Biscuits, Breakfast and Beauty Sleep

by Kelly Crawford

You must know (I pray you know!) that I am a struggling, selfish woman, striving, however poorly, to be a Proverbs 31 woman. I blog to myself 🙂

I am also not a morning person…(remember the coffee grinder incident?)

So yesterday, it came as a rather inconvenient surprise that the Lord spoke so firmly to me before I had even opened my eyes!

In my defense, I am nursing a baby who still wakes up several times during the night…I’m just saying.

But Monday morning, I had barely woken up and would have rolled back over to get my usual 30 minutes extra sleep–you know, to make up for all my “sacrifice” during the night, when plain as the sky I heard the words, “She looketh well to the ways of her household”.

“Yes I know that Lord, but…”

See, my husband was upstairs getting ready for work. Here’s the confession: I hardly ever get up and make him breakfast. I’m so sorry to burst your bubble, but my sweet husband has always claimed that he doesn’t really like to eat in the mornings.

But after all these years of marriage, I’m pretty sure he’s just too sweet to make me feel like I need to get up.

He works out in the sun all day–heavy manual labor–the boy needs something to eat in the mornings!

So yesterday, I mixed up a batch of homemade frozen biscuits, and this morning I got up with him and popped a couple of them in the toaster oven, along with an egg, a slice of sandwich meat and cheese.

Well, it’s a start…I’m SO not a morning person–

I draw the line at “she also rises while it is yet night”.

Frozen Biscuit Recipe
5 c. flour (I used 1/2 whole wheat, 1/2 white) 1 c. butter
1/2 c. sugar 2 pkg. yeast
1 tsp. salt 1/2 c. warm water
1 tsp. soda 2 c. buttermilk
3 tsp. baking powder
Mix dry ingredients together; cut in pieces of butter. Dissolve yeast in warm water; add to milk. Add milk to dry mixture; mix well. (I had to add a lot more flour to get it stiff enough to roll out.) Turn onto floured surface; fold over, working in small amounts of flour, several times. Pat or roll out to desired thickness; cut and place on greased cookie sheet and freeze. As soon as biscuits are frozen, place them in freezer bag. You can roll in melted butter before baking at 400 until brown. (You can defrost 30 min. before, but it is not necessary.)

My husband just goes bonkers when I learn to make something new from scratch! I almost picked up a batch of frozen rolls the other day but decided not to and to see if I could find if it were possible to make them!

What I do – in the evening I take a bunt pan, put a layer of sugar and butter in the bottom, place the frozen rolls in a single layer, cover with brown sugar and butter and top with a towel. Lord willing they rise overnight, and in the morning you just turn on the oven and cook until the tops are brown. It’s almost as good as doughnuts! And about as healthy. 😛

But it’s great if you know you aren’t going to have much time in the morning to cook. 🙂

Thank you for the recipe!!!!

I can so relate. I have been married almost 21 years and we have nine children. I used to get up with dh and get his breakfast. Then he joined the military and got up so very early and didn’t want me to get up with him. So for the past 15 years or so, I haven’t had to get up with him at 5:30 am. I am thankful he doesn’t require it. I also don’t think I have gotten one nights sleep in the past 15 years! I am a morning person and must be asleep by at least 10 pm each night. But with waking with littles each and every night I can get up at about 7 am each day.

(My little 5 yo just fell off our tree house down 6 ft and has a broken nose and lots of bruising on the front of his little body, a couple of sprained ligaments in his little hand and is in a lot of pain most of the night…but my baby is weaned!)

Well, just wanted to say I can relate.

*AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
That’s my sigh of relief. You give me hope! LOL
I am SO a night owl (I could stay up until 4 or 5 in the morning easily every single day, get up at 10 and be fine), but my husband *is* one that like breakfast cooked in the morning. He doesn’t mind doing it himself, but I am sure his day is easier when I get up and make it for him.

I am not a morning person either. I am working on it, but it’s so hard! My hubby needs something substantial for breakfast too so something I could fix the night before would be nice. I do muffins a lot but I needed a biscuit recipe. Thanks!

Thanks for the recipe!

Up until now my recipe has been…. well, buy frozen biscuits. But I am excited to give these a try!

Thank you for your transparency and candidness. This is something that I struggle with, as well. Bless your heart for getting up with your hubby! I am sure that it was a great blessing for him!

Hey, Kelly– The Lord has recently convicted me of this too. Upon reading Do Hard Things” by the Harris boys, I decided that getting up early would be my “hard thing”. I, too, am night nursing, and Vince leaves at 6:30am! In addition to being a presence and preparing a simple breakfast, I am devoting 30 mins. of prayer time just for him, letting the Lord reveal to me how I should pray. Vince doesn’t know this.

The first week I tackled this “hard thing” enthusiastically. The second week was a struggle, but it is becoming a habit. I have to be diligent to take an afternoon nap with my little man now or I will be a grouch by supper. 🙂

I am enjoying your blog.

Blessing,
Misty Smith
