Wives are Like Thumbs…Sort of

by Kelly Crawford

My husband is a builder, and as such, he has accidents from time to time. Yesterday’s accident involved his smashing his thumb with a hammer, using all the force his strong arm could muster. (He didn’t curse 😉 I asked him.)

He smashed it flat. It continues to bleed and the nail is already white and gross and will be falling off. It throbs constantly.

He said, reflecting on his work day with the injured thumb, “You’d be surprised how important your thumb is”.

Yes, the function of the thumb is often overlooked. Until its function is impaired, and then the realization of its importance is a constantly present reality.

Of course I responded to him, “That sounds like a good blog post to me” 😉 (Compassion isn’t my gift. 🙁

The thumb is distinctly different from the other fingers. Its difference is precisely what makes the hand operate properly. Its very nature of functioning quite opposite to the direction of the other fingers is what is so perfect about the way God designed the hand.

Distinctly different…distinctly important.

And the thumb is OK with that. It’s really kind of special, don’t ya think?

What if the thumb didn’t like being different? Rebelled against its God-ordained position on the hand? It wouldn’t take long for us to notice, and to see how severely our work is impaired.

Musings for the wife and mother….

Bless his heart! Do you all have any tea tree oil? If you don’t, get someone to go and get some RIGHT NOW and put it on that thumb. It will help relieve a lot of the soreness. They carry it at Walmart in the vitamin section (usually on the bottom). It is worth every penny and you only need a few drops (I think it is between 4 and 6 dollars).

Great analogy, Kelly!

My husband is a builder too, of all sorts of things from all sorts of materials.

A couple of months ago, he hammered his thumb in the saws-all as the blade reciprocated back and forth. I heard the yell and knew he was using a saw. I thought I would find a missing digit when I got out there.

What I found was his thumb was totally swollen up from the munching it took. He had lots of work he was trying to get done that day, but not much more got done that day.

Two months later, the pad of his thumb is still much bigger than the other and his feeling in it is still not back to normal.

It is amazing how much we depend upon our thumbs in daily life without even realizing it.

Thanks for the great word picture.

The homeopathic Arnica is essential for any bruising or injuries; I’ve even used it for surgery. He should take it regularly right now!

The homeopathic Arnica is essential for any injuries; he should take it regularly right now, even every 15m until it settles down a bit; hope this helps!

You know what else about the thumb? It is short and probably the least ‘attractive’ finger. It rarely has jewels bought for it, which is OK, because those jewels may get in the way of it’s productivity.

:o)

hmmmm…deep thoughts. ;o)
