Weave Truth or Fail as a Parent

by Kelly Crawford

I listen to as much news as I can stand these days, and usually end up in deep thought over one thing:

“How did we drop the baton?”

How did a country once full of intelligent men and women,  of courageous pluck, who believed in the truth that God’s Word contains wisdom that is true and good for all men, willing to fight and die for things that are right and things that make us free–how did we, in just a few generations, turn out a country full of apathetic citizens that hardly know where they came from, or what’s really going on, not willing to fight for much of anything–especially not “truth” because, well, they don’t really know truth?  How did we end up with a generation of people so oblivious that they are about to give up this great country we love and call HOME, and they don’t even know it?

We have failed to fulfill our commands across the generations.  We have failed to teach our children of God morning, noon and night. We have failed to weave TRUTH into our daily lives, to pass it on to our children so powerfully that they would pass it on to theirs.

“Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ Sons when the Lord said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.” (Deuteronomy 4:9, 10)

In What Makes a Family, Edith Schaeffer writes:

“The primary place for the flag of truth to be handed on is in the family. The truth was meant to be given from generation to generation….

Explaining the things of the Bible, of God’s love, and of future prophecy is not meant to be something separated into a cubby-hole of “religious instruction” or “family prayer.” As children grow older there is to be a flowing unity in talking about history, present world news, science, which has its seeds in the beginning days of the first understanding of sentences, the first questions. Children’s questions must be taken seriously at the ages of two and three, or they won’t be continuing to ask you at twelve and twenty-three. The importance of being given answers and being treated as a significant human being begins as soon as answers are asked for….

“Look, dear, at that wonderful magnolia tree coming out with creamy, perfect blossoms. Only God could make such a growing thing. Just imagine; it once was a tiny little tree, and it grew into a big one. God can make things that grow, and then seeds that start new trees of the same kind. Isn’t He wonderful?”

“Did you hear that bird’s song? Listen to it! Imagine God’s creating birds that could sing like that! He would have those sounds in His mind first, just like a music composer has sounds go through his head when he is writing music for a violin or a whole orchestra. How great God is.”

“Ohhhh, I see lights coming on along the bay. What a sight. Some man thought up how to use electricity, didn’t he? And another designed those shapes for the lamps?” — “Amazing! You can see the sunset in the water at the same time. Imagine people thinking there was no person there to design the sun and the water and the reflection on all those ripples!”

“God’s direct Word comes to us — consider your place in the family as central, not just in this moment of history, but as part of the “relay.” Don’t let a gap come because of you. Don’t take the beauty of the family life — and the reality of being able to hand down true truth to one more generation — as a light thing. It is one of the central commands of God. It is direct disobedience to God to not make known His truth, to not make known the truth of Himself, and to not make known the wonderful works that He has done.

It is not a responsibility to be handed over to the church and Sunday school. In fact, in many churches and Sunday schools there is a false flag being handed to the children, and a wrong path being pointed out. The Word of God has been ignored by some, and so the blind are leading the blind. Yes, finding a true church for your family is important, but it can’t take the place of the teaching by example and speaking, when going to bed, getting up, eating meals, and walking together. This is a family task and pleasure, and one of the basic “togethernesses” commanded by God since the beginning.”

May we be “repairers of the breach” in our families.  May we lay aside everything that would hinder our efforts of truth-weaving, and pick up the baton again, pointing our children to the truth of God at every moment.

Kelly,
This post brought to my mind something I read in one of your older posts the other day (“Crying Out for More Children?”), which my husband and I were just talkiing about last night. It is definitely a thought to ponder that I think ties in with what you are saying today…

“If one couple has two children, and all of the following children have two children, in five generations, there will be 32 children.

If one couple has eight children, and all of the following children have eight children, in five generations, there will be 7,776 children!

Provided that the couples have raised their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, that is more evangelizing than any church is capable of! That is 7,776 voters for President, homosexual laws, abortion, etc. That is 7,776 children parenting yet another generation where the numbers become astronomical. That is 7,776 children who are growing up to be godly leaders of this nation, to make up the moral fabric of society, to be America. And as a reminder, that is just one family!!!”

Kelly . . .

Thank you for such a beautiful reminder to stay diligent, on task and focused on our goal – to raise Godly children, for our enemy is on the prowl-

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” I Peter 5:8

I love how she says: God’s direct Word comes to us — consider your place in the family as central, not just in this moment of history, but as part of the “relay.” Don’t let a gap come because of you.” What a WONDERFUL encouragement!!! So, powerful!!!

Posted something similar this week too – He must be laying this on many hearts. I just love that!!! 🙂

I so appreciate your ministry to the family. Praying for many families to be encouraged and challenged.

YES!!!

I believe one of the enemy’s most effective tools against His people is compartmentalization. So many people do not see the wall they have allowed the evil one to build between their “spiritual” life and the rest of their life.

Every thought, word, and action is to be submitted to Him and is intended to glorify Him.

Every corner of creation is a revelation of Him. Lord, please give us eyes of wonder. And help us faithfully testify to your Majesty before our children and before a world in desperate need of You. May we shout from the mountaintops that You alone are God.

I believe the Lord calls His Body to an increasing level of personal holiness. The purification of our spirits deepens our message and intensifies our testimony.

If I can remain unmoved in the midst of a creation that is crying out, declaring His glory, the very rocks will testify in my place. May that never be!

I do love it when the Spirit’s message to my spirit is confirmed in the same message to others. I, too, spoke of a similar burden on my spirit just a couple of days ago! (http://iliveinanantbed.blogspot.com/2010/09/foundational-issues.html)

I am so encouraged!! May we be salt and light, first in our homes and then to our world!

In our homeschool, one of the kids’ favorite things we do is a study called Character Sketches that takes a character quality and gives examples from Scripture and from the world of nature. It is truly a testimony to the Lord’s creation and the wonder He wove into every aspect of what He made. The kids are excited to learn how incredibly designed each animal is and how that reveals Him!! (http://store.iblp.org/products/C1/)

Okay, I’ll stop now! 🙂 I am very passionate about this topic! Thank you so much for allowing us to participate in the conversation!!

Kelly,

Your blog mentors me so much! I have only been reading for about 8 months. I am unmarried daughter, but I am actually your age. Alhough I do not have my own children, God has given me a spiritual influnece over children in my family as well as children in my church. I am able to apply what I learn from your blog in the sphere God has place me. The thing I respect most about your blog is that you are so quick to point us to the “Truth of God’s Word” that inspires me the most. So when you are up at midnight posting what the Lord has placed in your heart be reminded that He is using it to mentor other women.

Again, another wonderfully encouraging post!I think the very same thing when I see the things around me in this world, “How did we drop the baton?”.It makes me very sad and also makes me realize what a hefty job our forefathers have left us with.Several years ago,the Lord impressed upon me,through a woman at a homeschool conference, about the need to have a generational outlook,to stop only looking at today and just our children, but to look at the future,my children’s children’s children and the importance of securing that Godly foundation within my children in order for them to pass it on to future generations. It is a scary thing, well, maybe I shouldn’t use the term scary, but it is a weighty matter that we need to take seriously. We only have one chance with our children.Just typing that out puts a lump in my throat!
Thank you for your blog and speaking the truth to encourage us all!

Hello Word Warrior! My husband lost his job this week and we have 11 little mouths to feed and 2 adults (and one growing in the womb) also, so needless to say, it has been really hard! As we have been going through the past few days with already no money in our account, mortgage unpaid and no job, God has been speaking to me so much about maybe this is not all about me! God is going to use this to refine me and I know that He will because it is through the difficult times that our hearts begin to see His hand even more. (I wish I could say that I was that way 100% of the time!) Anyway, I know our children watch us when we go through things like this and they observe our every move! Do we lean on God or do we blame God? Do we seek God for answers or do we seek our own answers? I can handle these times although terribly difficult and not fun, but someday when my kids remember what mom and dad did in tough times hopefully they will see and know who God really is and they will know what I know! That He does not fail us and He loves us! Parenting is about selflessness anyway, right? So if it be me and my husband going through situations that are hard and just plain scary, I hope that God will use it for my children! No church or Sunday school can teach that! 🙂

Just wanted to share that with you and if your “big” family could lift our “big” family up in prayer, I would greatly appreciate it!;) You bring so much conviction and blessing to my life and I thank you for all that you do for God’s kingdom!

Oh Heather, we will lift your family up. I’m sure this is very scary for you! But I have all the confidence in the world that you are exactly right—God is going to do something magnificent in your lives….even if it takes a while to see it.

And I want to hear about it!

Heather,
God worked SO much in our lives and hearts during the time my husband was unemployed. (We were also expecting a baby at the time.) I will be praying for you and your family!

Hello my sister in Christ,

This is the first time I’ve responded on here, but I read all the time. I agree with so much of what you teach and I’m thankful to see that the Lord is speaking to His people!
This topic has been on my heart too for a while. As I come before the Lord almost daily for my six children (4-14), I pray for the wisdom to train them in the way they should go. I pray that we can teach them to hate sin and the “world” and love God and His ways.
I’ve been so sadened this week watching my 20 year old niece fall further away from God and more into the world. Her parents just don’t understand why she doesn’t fear God and why she is rebelling so much. I can see reasons, but I won’t go into that here. But you are so right. We as parents have dropped the baton and then we wonder why…. I have such a holy fear for my children’s salvation. I take this job very seriously. I pray that others will too.

Thank you again for all you do. Don’t stop!!

Cathy 🙂

Amen! Thank YOU so much for standing up for truth here on your blog. I wish we could be neighbors since I have a difficult time finding other believers, especially women, who are willing to be outspoken about issues that matter! It is so refreshing to hear a Christian woman and mother standing up for something. Watching the news is extremely depressing, and it deeply grieves me to see where our nation is going, but it bothers me far more to see Christians who are unwilling to stand up for truth and to see that many of them have been just as brainwashed by secular humanism as the rest of the world. Thank you for your excellent posts, again and again. They continually make my day! 🙂
