If You’re Looking For Great Books for Christmas…

by Kelly Crawford

I’ve bragged on Beautiful Feet Books before because of the fine job they’ve done resurrecting the impeccable literary art of the past and bringing historical events to life in what we call “living books”.

I’ve had the opportunity to read more of their books over the past month and they have become a main staple in the reading diet of our homeschooling.  My children are captivated by these historical gems!

Of Courage Undaunted

Of Courage Undaunted is the fascinating tale of the Lewis & Clark expedition. James Daugherty cleverly brings the events to life through vivid imagery weaved throughout the interesting plot.  I love to teach my children history through living books that grab their attention and leave an impression rather than dry, unrelated bits characteristic of many history text books.

Along Came Galileo

Along Came Galileo has really ignited a love of all things space and has become a springboard for us to explore all sorts of topics about the universe.  The author tells the story of Galileo in a way that makes him seem like a neighbor, rather than a man who lived hundreds of years ago.  I have learned so much about this fascinating man and the immeasurable contribution he made to our world.

The Daisy Chain

The Daisy  Chain is a high-school level novel that illuminates the controversies surrounding the domestic separateness and the political and educational challenges of the Victorian era.  I’m still working on this book and can’t wait to finish it! It’s an intriguing walk into the customs and lifestyle of the Victorian era, and a peek into the life of a family and woman devoted to serving God above all else. I’ll give more details when I finish reading!

Be sure to check out Beautiful Feet Book’s Holiday Promotion too! All orders over $100 will receive a free D’Aulaire book AND free shipping!  The D’Aulaire books have, by far, been our favorites and just last week my 8-year-old said, “Could you get us some more of those books?”

We used “Of Courage Undaunted” when studying Lewis and Clark several years ago. We loved it!

I have been pretty busy lately but I just took a minute to read through a few of your last few posts. I love it when you recommend books because I know they will be good, so thanks for that!

Your post about relieving Christmas stress was fantastic (especially what you said about being thankful). I can relate to the frustration of family giving in excess and it has always stressed me out because I couldn’t ever live up to what others give. So thanks for that.)

The post about Re-thinking Christmas. Wow, I have been trying to weed it down for years now. That is fantastic! I printed the story out about the “Richest Family in the Church” from the link on Ann Voskamp’s blog and read it to my kids. I plan to pass that along to some friends.

One more thing… your upcycled cabinet doors are so pretty. I am sure your recipients will be very happy to get them!

God Bless you and your family! You are a blessing to me.

Thank you, Kim! You’re a blessing to me too! (And didn’t you just LOVE that “richest family” story???)
