Frugal Friday: Turning Trash to Treasure

by Kelly Crawford

We just moved into a new house, and I am enjoying finding frugal ways to decorate. Since furniture is so outrageous, I don’t know that I would go buy all new furniture even if we could; I really enjoy making the most of what God gives us.

So, we needed a coffee table. We live in a fairly rustic home, so I wanted something different and rustic. I had bought 2 or 3 old window panes a few months back from a man who sells “junk” out of his front yard. They were REALLY old…paint chipping, and even parts of it rotting on the bottom. Nevertheless, I had a “vision” for this old window pane.

I got my children to start sanding and sloughing off the chipped paint. Then, I found some wooden table legs that we had never used, and drilled them to each corner. I took the paint we had painted our walls with, brushed it on the old window pane, then followed right behind it with a paper towel. The finished look, I thought, was perfect.

The window cost $5.00.

If you haven’t yet, you’ve GOT to check out http://www.craigslist.org, then click on the city region closest to you. Then you can click on the “free” link and do a search for whatever you need, or just browse. But if you find something you are interested in, jump. Those items generally go FAST. But then, browse/search the regular seller categories too, since often there are super cheap things there. Freecycle.org is another alternative, but I think you have to sign up. It’s free at least. Both are great places to clear things out too, like if you just really don’t want to drive that vanload of stuff (or couch/loveseat combo)to the thrift store after your yard sale. My son and I always get professional haircuts for free from one of the big chains by trolling craigslist. Love it!

That is beautiful! But your children seriously must not roughhouse much. We’ve done the timeouts and everything and we’re at the point where not keeping stuff like that is a safety issue instead of a discipline one.

This is really good-looking. I have seen something similar at a friend’s house, & she eventually added a piece of heavy glass cut to fit exactly, on the top, & then put seasonal things on each little window pane, now protected by the large glass top. She used Fall leaves, tiny pine cones, or shells. Once she used older photos…it looked great!

Wow that is really creative… and pretty! Have you seen the “Trash to Treasure” books? They have them at the library, but you can get them at Amazon and ebay for practically nothing. I was surprised at how cheap they are sold…. they have lots of ideas ilke this. I told Michael that since they are so cheap, I want to get all of them.
