Extending the Gospel Beyond Our Homes: The Big Impact of Little Missions

by Kelly Crawford

I just feel like I’m not doing enough”, a young mother said to me recently. I want to teach my children the importance of ministry. But I’m so busy doing life, I don’t know how to fit anything else in.

The greatest missionary who ever lived ministered to one life at a time, in the simplest ways. The greatest and most far-reaching evangelical effort ever performed in history was a man meeting the basic needs of one person at a time. Jesus was the perfect missionary. Yet we still measure success with numbers or impressive programs or big endeavors.

As a mom and wife, you already have a mission field. You minister, as He did, to one person at a time, caring for their most basic needs, and discipling them as you live life.

But as families, we must extend the gospel beyond our walls.”…

The world likes to make us believe that our work only counts if it’s outside our family, as if our children were less important than other people’s. The truth is, God wants us to minister from the home out, not from the world in. We’re *told* to be keepers at home. We’re *told* that a man’s family is the measuring stick by which we should judge his fitness for other ministry. We’re *never* told that our children should or even can be put on a back burner while we go busybodying about looking for more people to serve. Not only are our children our first ministry, they’re the most important one. Our ministry to others (when we have families) should be done alongside our families, whether inside our homes, or as missionaries, or at the homes of neighbors and friends. We absolutely should go the extra mile to minister to people besides our children, but never, ever before. If the kids are all you have time for, then that is what God has given you to do. I’d like to ask people who are worried about whether we have “real” ministry: Are my children not real people?

Great! I have felt “limited” at times because of my husband’s preference for me to stay home so often. In the past I felt that I had “missed” out on other ministry opportunities. I am thankful because he has helped me to focus on my main ministry (to him and our children)and to not feel a false sense of guilt that I cannot do all the things others are doing.

Kelly- I Second that fist pump to boot. That cracked me up!!

I have found that as my children have gotten older that it is very easy to start getting caught up in doing to many things outside the home. Not that this is always wrong in certain area’s but I have realized that I need to be home encouraging and helping out with questions on lessons instead of leaving them here (not really that often-but needs to be only when REALLY important) to fend for themselves which they are perfectly capable at 15 and 18 but I would so much rather be here for them then to come home at the end of the day after “ministering to other people” or doing good things and be so tired that I put off what really needs to be done.

I have four grown kids in there 20’s now and I KNOW HOW THE TIME GOES SO FAST!! My 21 yr.old daughter heard me telling a friend the other day how I am bringing some things back into our homeschooling that I some how let go by the wayside and she said “Yes Mom..I remember when you did that with us all the time. She said it very fondly.

In case you are wondering..lol..One of them is singing in the morning before we start our school work. With two very Macho teen sons..really lol. It’s working. They laughed and chuckled the first couple of days but I know they secretly love it.

I remember many times feeling the same way as Natalie at times.”Limited”. Well..now let me tell you all! Those kiddo’s that you all are hard at work raising and loving and schooling and everything else…They Will Remember all the little things you did to help them and other people. They will grow up and talk to you about it and you will see them reaching out to other people and helping them. They will grow up and tell other people about the Lord and will live there lives for Him!!

Do not grow weary moms!! It’s so tough at times when they are so little but it will be so worth it!!

Ah, Keri, so encouraging! Thank you for being the cheerleader to younger moms, testifying to God’s goodness and spurring us on for Him. It is incredibly helpful to have someone “on the other side” cheering.
