Beat This Frugal Tip!

by Kelly Crawford

Is it any weirder to reuse toilet paper that some misguided youth strung up around your yard than rolling the yard in the first place?

My kids wanted to go clean up the rolled entrance to our driveway, and in they brought NOT ONLY a big armful of “unused” toilet paper, the culprits left a couple of unfinished rolls!

Does that gross anybody out? It doesn’t me! I put the big wad of it into a basket to place in my bathroom (I was going to have the kids re-roll it onto an empty roll, but NAH!)

Imagine organizing an effort to collect all this wasteful paper around the neighborhood!

You might could get on the 6:00 news 😉 LOL!

(I started to grab all the plastic knives that they stuck in the ground (???) and wash them, but changed my mind.)

Kelly, NO that is NOT weird! It sounds like something I would do (but that my husband would not let me to — I would have to “sneak” it).

I think it is so great that you are sharing frugal tips and encouraging young women to save and pinch pennies so that can possibly stay at home.

Here’s one of my grandmother’s weird tips (this one really is WEIRD and GROSS and I don’t recomment it): she used to make me take all the dried USED tissues of my purse and open them out and re-use them. Ok, they were my own germs, but still… Now, that’s frugal!

Oh, go back and get those plastic knives!

We only used tissues once in a while, usually to tuck in our purses to go out.

What we used at home was this: my grandmother would cut up my dad’s old undershirts to use as handkerchiefs. They didn’t look great, but they were SOFT.

Regular handkerchiefs and tissues (they didn’t have Puffs in those days) really tore up your nose, if you had a prolonged cold, and your nose would be all sore and red and flaky. Gross!

These handkerchiefs made out of Dad’s old undershirts were so soft, and it prevented “torn up nose”. We just used them at home, and put them through the wash when we were done with them.

ooh, I have to disagree. I think I’d rather wash the knives and reuse them. I don’t want to wipe with something that’s been out in the yard. 🙂

I’m glad it works for you though!

I think plastic knives are pretty useless, but I would rewash them if I could think of what to use them for.

Ha! almost makes me wish someone would tp our place 😀
Ok, this *might* be right up there with your tip…

On another site, a lady stated she made “adult” cloth wet wipes for family use (#1, only)and kept them in a wipe container on the toilet tank. The used wipes went into her cloth diaper pail and paper TP use was cut down to #2/guest usage. That could save a lot in a houseful of females. Before anyony says that is too gross (like I started to), please remember the common practice of rinsing/soaking cloth baby dipes in the family toilet–if the germs get removed well enough to put the dipe back on baby, I expect a wet “adult” wipe would clean up just as well.

Or, you could check http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com/sanitarypads.htm for instructions on homemade sanitary pads. Even if that isn’t your thing, the rest of the site is worth a look.

Since disposable “paper products” are a huge budget gobbler for our family, I have been looking for ways to cut down on their usage. Although I haven’t tried either of these things yet myself, I am pleased to have found the info.

I once had instructions for home made baby wipes. You cut a roll of paper towels in half, right through the tube, with a knife. Then you put them in a container with a mixture of water, baby wash and baby oil. I don’t remember the proportions, though. You can maybe search it out on the web.

I love the little basket you put that toilet paper in, Kelly! Made it look special. Wish someone would toilet paper my yard. Paper products are expensive.

I read the site about the home made pads. My mother-in-law told me she and her 5 sisters and their mother just ripped up old sheets. She is 87, and in her day, Kotex did not exist.

I'm a germaphobe, so that kinda grosses me out. Imagine what was on the hands stringing that paper, & the "things" all over the ground that it was sitting on (droppings, animal footprints etc), & then to use it *there*, seems very unhealthy to say the least.

I do want to become more frugal, & yours & other peoples blogs have been very encouraging, but unless we were desperate I draw the line there LOL…

Anon,

LOL! If it’s any consolation, the paper was strung on our bushes, not on the ground. And if I remember correctly from my tp days (!) you just toss the roll and let it run freely–very few hand-touching? Anyway…I’m not a germophobe at all so I don’t think a thing about that!

um. spoken like a real honest to goodness former teenager… kids do some pretty gross stuff to the junk they use to ‘decorate’ your yard, in the hopes that you’ll bring it into your home and be silly enough to use it. have fun with the diseases. 🙁

I have a “theory” about germs. I think we Americans are so anti-germ that we cause our immune systems to be extremely frail.
(thus not being able to go to foreign countries without getting lots of shots!)
Just a theory… thus we don’t spend the extra money on bottled water or antibacterial soaps, etc.
I think it’s a scare tactic to take our money away (and possibly our health?).
I get really sick of all the unverified health claims printed on consumables.
P.S. Anon 1, what do you think that toilet paper is made out of? “recycled stuff perhaps?” Who touched it before it was packaged. Maybe a terrorist?? Hee hee

Due to outdoor allergies, this probably wouldn’t work for us.

Homemade Baby Wipes:
1 plastic container with a tight-sealing lid.
1 roll of strong, thick paper towels.
2 cups of water.
1 tablespoon of baby shampoo.
1 tablespoon of baby oil.

Boil the water. Let it cool. Mix the cooled water, baby shampoo and baby oil.

Cut the roll of paper towels in half with a knife, right through the tube.

Remove the tube so that the paper towels can pull through the center of the container.

Place the paper towels in the container.

Pour the liquid mixture over the paper towels. Put the lid on the container. Let set for 10 minutes. Turn over, for an even distribution of the mixture. Use!

(Looked it up on the web.)

I take it another step further – really reusing your toilet paper! 😉

I go into frugality where all but one of my friends looks at me and thinks, “Freak!” (I no longer buy any “hygenic” paper products, only paper for… well, writing or printing.)

Here are some other posts with money-saving ideas and recipes (sorry if it clutters things up in the comments, but I love sharing recipes, etc.!)
