ADHD, Multi-Tasking, Undisciplined…ME

by Kelly Crawford

You should know this about me…

Despite my good intentions and goals, and ideas, I am one scattered individual.

On a good day I chalk it up to being a fabulous multi-tasker

Although I don’t know if stopping in the middle of washing dishes because I remembered I left the check book half balanced, and then on my way to finish the check book I think it would be a great idea to read Beatrix Potter to my children, so I huddle them around on the porch to begin the book, but we all get distracted by a mama bird feeding her youngsters, so we hurry in to retrieve a book about birds.

But on the way in to our school room, I stop and check my email and realize I need to answer a commenter from this blog, so the children busy themselves with the book.

THEN, I join them, for a few minutes, and remember the check book again…no the dishes…oh wow, it’s time for lunch!

Can anybody relate? Don’t tell me your kid needs to be on Ritalin 😉 Maybe they just need to practice discipline early in life to avoid what I am.

OR, maybe I’m not impaired at all 😉

Maybe multi-tasking IS my gift and I should just try to keep up with the constant adrenaline….

I just remembered something–must run!

Hehe. I can definitely relate. Sometimes this trait seems like a blessing in discernible ways (e.g., a professor pondered, concievably accurately, if my scatteredbrainedness is behind my creativity). Sometimes I have trouble not being very frustrated (e.g., when my parents are frustrated because, though I started out obeying a command, I forgot to carry it out all the way; or when I find I’ve left the stove burner ON once again and think how somebody could end up seriously hurt).

I (poster #4) didn’t think to add that it’s encouraged me to think you are scatterbrained and raising so many children. At times I think it would be a disaster if I educated my own children, should I have any. And seeing here that you do indeed sound quite like me in particulars, yet seem to be a wonderful mother, is even more encouraging. 🙂

Yep, me all the way. My poor kids. One son, when I tell him we’re working on his reading today, says to me, “You’ll probably forget.” Ouch.

I am probably worse than you are this way!!!! LOL You know why I said this? Because I cannot imagine anyone being any worse than I am about it.

I am HORRIBLY forgetful and always have half finished projects all over the place.

Yesterday I set a plastic cup ON THE HOT STOVE and melted it! Thankfully it peeled right off after it cooled. 😀

But I can relate to the creativity part too 🙂

I have to tell myself, OUT LOUD daily, to “Focus, grasshopper.”

Otherwise, I end up looking around at the end of the day asking myself “What did I do all day?!” Getting a few small things done to completion is so fulfilling to me and enough to spur me on to completing other half-done projects.

I am really enjoying your blog!

I don’t know fully how this is yet as I am just the mother of one but I can imagine as our family gets bigger that this will look more and more like me too!:) I get the feeling from reading your blog though that you are very successful at multi-tasking and have a very well-run home so don’t beat yourself up!:)

While I’m encouraged to know there are others who struggle to stay focused, as I do, what I really need to learn is how you each manage to do what’s called for to teach your children, guide your household, and walk with the Lord inside a mixed-up,often undisciplined brain. I don’t understand why the Lord gave my incredible husband and wonderful children such a scattered wife and Momma. I have to daily ask Him to give me wisdom and guidance, and help me discipline myself just to focus.
Any help out there?

That is ME! My dh says it’s so easy to push the disherwasher button on or the washing machine button–he just doesn’t understand…(sigh) I’ve convienced myself I am NOT a multi-tasker. If anything is going to get done 100% I just have to focus on that one thing until it’s totally finished!

Anonymous 2,

See if this helps you:

Also, you might try Anne Ortlund’s trilogy including Disciplines of the Beautiful Woman. She suggests ways to organize one’s life in simplified, kingdom-focused way (e.g., by making a notebook similar to what is linked to above).
