Why I’m at Home: “I Wish That Someone Had Told Me”

by Kelly Crawford

“I started to ask myself the hard questions: Who is going to raise my child someday? Will the nights and weekends be enough?…

Instead of asking for a sign to point me down my specific road, I should look at God’s road map for motherhood. What did He expect of me? What did He want me to know?

I was already familiar with Titus 2 and Proverbs 31, but now I read them with a different eye. Instead of dismissing them as chauvinistic or as historically isolated (as I was prone to do as a girl-power collegiate), I looked to try to learn what God might be telling all women, including me as a future mother….I remember finding it [guidance] one place I didn’t expect — in Matthew 15…

I thought what she said about the desires of most working moms was interesting as well… that most of them WANT to be home. It’s just in our blood!

I wonder how many women experience the process of “just starting to know” she discusses? For me, the desire to be home wasn’t something that happened instantly – it was a slow process of learning more about being a homemaker and experiencing life on the job for the past two years. I’m not home yet – but, with the Lord’s help – my husband and I are getting to the point where I can be! 🙂

Blessings,
Luci

It is interesting to see how some people come to this conclusion. Much to the dismay of my teachers in high school, I knew I wanted to be a wife and stay-at-home mom back then. I was a straight A student that “could do anything”, except be a mom apparently. I was vocal about my ideas, I wasn’t ashamed of them then. What was most interesting was the reaction of other students. Most of the girls thought it was a stupid idea. But many of my male friends told me they hoped to find a girl like me to marry, that would stay home with their children.

I think a lot of women start off wanting to be at home with children – it was what I dreamed of as a little girl (although I tended to dream of children in the setting of marrying a prince and living in a palace!) When I was a young teenager my friends used to laugh at me because I wanted to be a farmers wife! It was only my late teens that a career became more of a focus – and not through any burning desire for a particular career, more because I thought I ought to do something! Now I’ve been working and married a while and the desire to be home has begun again. I think even the most hardened career woman begins to feel the same once they’ve had their first child.

I actually sense a bit of a sea change in women of my generation (I’m 24). I went to a grammar school which was full of high-acheiving girls. I talk to many of my friends now, who are doctors, engineers and lawyers. Most of them talk of marriage and children as something they are desperate for, and want now. The average age for first marriages for women in the UK used to be (in the last 15 years of so) around 29/30. It’s started to drop, and the statistics are borne out when I go on facebook and see old acquaintances, many of whom aren’t christians and so would be expected to want to simply cohabit, getting engaged and married. I think women are beginning to realise that they would rather prioritise children and family over their career and that they can’t have everything.
