Why God Makes us Wait

by Kelly Crawford

I’m only waiting for the blessed joy of holding a little one…the waiting is so hard, the questions and concerns of my mind so great…and yet, it’s such a small thing to wait for a joyous end that is sure to come.

Many of you wait in much deeper pain, with greater agony, with larger questions. Perhaps this poem I found comforting will bring comfort to you too.

Waiting On The Lord

Desperately, helplessly, longingly, I cried.
Quietly, patiently, lovingly God replied.

I pled and I wept for a clue to my fate,
And the Master so gently said, “Child, you must wait!”

“Wait?’, you say, wait!” my indignant relpy.
“Lord, I need answers, I need to know why!

Is your hand shortened? Or have you not heard?
By FAITH I have asked, and am claiming your word.”

“My future and all to which I can relate
Hangs in the balance, and you tell me to WAIT?

I’m needing a ‘yes,’ a go-ahead sign,
Or even a ‘no’ to which I can resign.”

“And Lord, you promised that if we believe
Weneed but to ask, and we shall receive.

And Lord, I’ve been asking, and this is my cry:
I’m weary of asking! I need a reply!”

Then quietly, softly, I learned of my fate
As my Master replied once again, “You must wait.”

So, I slumped in my chair, defeated and taut
And grumbled to God, “So, I’m waiting. . . for what?”

He seemed then to kneel and His eyes wept with mine,
And he tenderly said, “I could give you a sign.

I could shake the heavens, and darken the sun.
I could raise the dead, and cause mountians to run.

All you seek, I could give, and pleased you would be.
You would have what you want . . but, you wouldn’t know ME.”

“You’d not know the depth of my love for each saint;
You’d not know the power that I give to the faint;

You’d not learn to see through the clouds of despair;
You’d not learn to trust just by knowing I’m there;

You’d not know the joy of resting in me
When darkness and silence were all you could see.

“You’d never experience that fulness of love
As the peace of my Spirit descendslike a dove;

You’d know that I give and I save . . . (for a start),
But you’d not know the depth of the beat of my heart.”

“The glow of my comfort late into the night.
The faith that I give when you walk without sight,

The depth that’s beyond getting just what you asked
Of an infinite God, who makes what you have LAST.”

“You’d never know, should your pain quickly flee,
What it means that ‘My grace is sufficient for thee.’

Yes, your dreams for your loves ones overnight would come true,
But, oh, the loss! If I lost what I’m doing in you!”

“So, be silent, my child, and in time you will see
THAT THE GREATEST OF GIFTS IS TO GET TO KNOW ME,

And though oft may my answers is still but to WAIT.”
“And though oft’ My answers seem terribly late,

My most precious answer of all is still, “Wait.”

Thanks for sharing, a beautiful poem. I just did a study on “waiting on the Lord” for my women bible study. It really helped me to see that waiting on our Lord is not a bad thing but truly a blessing

That was wonderfully encouraging. It’s so true that we would be missing out on HIM so much if He gave us our ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on our timetable. I think of 2 Corinthians 1:3-7,

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ.
6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.”

God always has has the big picture in mind when He sovereignly orchestrates our lives. I know it is very difficult or you at the end of this pregnancy, but you sharing this with all of us was just one of the MANY reasons God is doing what He is in your life. I am praying for you Kelly during your time of waiting. God bless you and your soon arrival!!!

Love this poem! I used it in a blog post before, too – it’s written by a man named Russell Kelfer. Nancy Leigh DeMoss had shared it on a radio program and it really ministered to me! I have to refer to it often 😉

Hoping that baby arrives real soon… {hugs}

Thank you. I have a friend in a difficult marriage situation but she is standing strong as a godly woman and I want to send this to her to encourage her as she waits.

(the baby will come soon! Do not be afraid! I have often felt like I had the gestational length of an elephant! Especially with my sixth, seventh and eighth babies when it felt like my children were a “crowd” watching my every move-lol!)

Wow! Thank you Kelly! I needed this today!
I’m eagerly waiting to get pregnant again, while my biological clock is running out, and after a recent miscarriage!!
I’m earnestly praying for you, know the feeling, five of my eight babies were around 10 days late, the youngest (now 14months old) was 2 weeks late!
Thank you for still being a blessing, even in your distress!
Lots of love

((((hugs))))

My last two were 16 days past their “due date”, so I know the waiting just stinks.

Praying for you to have your little one in your arms soon, soon, soon. 🙂
