“I think God gives us the wisdom to make choices…”
I disagree with that statement. I think God gives us the capacity for obtaining wisdom, but we aren’t born with godly wisdom.
“Get wisdom! Get understanding!” Proverbs 4:5
“Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:3-5
Did you pay attention to the language? “If you CRY OUT”…this is the language of urgency and pleading!
How many of us are crying out for wisdom before we make decisions? How many of us are searching for understanding, for the “knowledge of God” like we would search for gold?
As a mother with little ones, are we crying out for wisdom? As parents making decisions about our children’s lives, are we pursuing discretion with everything in us?
Or are we letting the world dictate our choices without a second thought?
Do we even believe that God has an answer for every detail of our lives?
Do you think the world would look different if every Christian everywhere approached life this way?

I know what you mean. I have recently started begging the Lord for wisdom.
“Pour it out on me, Lord”
It’s not something I used to do, but as a parent it is IMPERATIVE! I am influencing little lives!
I can’t afford to mess up and with my own wisdom that could happen so easily.
“Wisdom is the principle thing. Therefore get wisdom. And with all thy getting, get understanding. Exalt her and she shalt promote thee. She shalt bring thee to honor when though dost embrace her.” Proverbs 4:7-8
This was one of the memory verses at music camp and it’s stuck with me. Looks to me like there’s a difference between getting, exalting, and embracing wisdom and just receiving wisdom from the Lord!
My children and I are in the midst of memorizing Proverbs. I want them to understand wisdom before they walk out of my house someday!
And what about in James 1, when it says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God.”? If God just gave it to us automatically, this verse wouldn’t be in the Bible!
This post is so rich with meaning and so are the verses in the comments. The older I get, the more I don’t know, which of course was not the result I expected in my teens! 😀
It’s so important for me to remember that God’s wisdom might not match up with ‘my’ logic, or common sense, or life experiences. You know, all the things it’s so easy to turn to for answers!
Great post. 🙂

We do have ONE choice: we have the choice to follow God’s wisdom or our wisdom. Hopefully, we opt for the latter – I know it’s something that I am currently working towards (smiles).
Oops! I made a whoopsie daisy in my last comment. The latter would be OUR wisdom. What I meant was it is hoped that we opt for the FORMER choice (as you read my above comment) to choose God’s wisdom over ours.
Sorry for the mistake. I must be tired. Ha!
