We Parent Out of Our Theology

by Kelly Crawford

“What we do is a by-product of how we think…today’s parents avoid the T-word–theology…It is a significant roadblock to parenting even though it is the American way of life.

We are as we think.  We parent out of our theology.  Everyone, Christian and non-Christian, has a theology–an idea of who God is and who we are by contrast.  Some are accurate.  Some are not.”  –William Farley Gospel-Powered Parenting

Very true! Someone once said a Christian parent brainwashes their children. I said EVERYONE brainwashes their children with what they believe. By the way we live, talk and teach, our kids are being immersed in our values (or lack thereof).

I was recently talked about negatively on a gay website because of an article I wrote for LAF. They said that I was brainwashing my children because I was teaching them about the Lord. We either teach our children truth or we let them be brainwashed by our liberal society.

Foundational! Many people don’t understand their own worldview, and don’t even consider how what other people do comes directly from how they view the world. It is absolutely imperative that we understand this principle and that our children that, too. We need teach them to understand the words and actions of others in that context. Otherwise, it limits our ability to influence. If we don’t really see the foundation people base their choices on, we are ineffective in our discussions with them about issues.

Another quote to go along with that from my husband Scott “Your morality dictates your theology”….I know too many people who have changed what they believed because of what sin they wanted to contiue to cherish.
