Perhaps few poems have ever affected me as much as The Innkeeper, written and recited by John Piper. It is true…of all the different angles of the Christmas story, of all the versions and retelling of Mary and Joseph’s journey, I have missed this. We all have–the reality of the cost of His coming for so many people, in the ironic twist of redemption, as the Life who brought death would end in ultimate victory. Those few words…”Herod slew all the male children…”

Wow, was that ever gripping, especially to hear Piper read it himself. Thanks for sharing the video.
I was THERE the first time he read this poem to our church. He used to write an advent poem every year as a gift to Bethlehem Baptist. It was something we all looked forward to. (Oh, I miss him!) But this one has always been my favorite, and we read the illustrated version to our kids every year.
What a privilege that must have been. This poem is truly gripping. What a gift, huh?
