Parenting With Purpose: You’re Leading a Whole Nation

by Kelly Crawford

As my husband explained last night to our children that as we invest in their lives, discipling them, teaching them the things of God, cultivating in them a love for His Word and saturating their hearts and mind with truth, that we do it with the expectation that they’ll pass the torch of faith onto their children, and their children to their children.

It’s a powerful function of The Great Commission, one Christians often overlook or undermine in the midst of pouring themselves into programs or other ministries with far less power of discipleship. Certainly some ministries are integral to The Great Commission, but none so much as a father and mother who understand the “nation” within their walls, the potential of exponential discipleship in the years to come with faithful laboring and intentional walking beside those to whom we are first given to bring to Christ.

My parenting takes on a whole new level of meaning when I grasp the reality of what I’ve been given! As I teach, love, and walk with my children, I do it for my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren. Now there’s a picture for purpose. Let us leave a legacy that returns to us in Heaven. May we not become weary in well doing.

I think about this everyday and the enormity of it often overwhelms me, BUT God is able where I or my husband are not and it grows us considerably. I like your post and your courage in tough times and how you handle this blog; I think you’re amazing.

“God is able.” If I’ve learned anything as a mother.

I saw this post last night and thought, “I should really get out those Living a Legacy CDs and listen to them again.” Then this morning I see Kathy’s Heart of Hospitality talk from the conference listed here! 😉 Great stuff for listening to as I live and work alongside my children, and always such an important reminder of what (and Who) we are living for.

Now I’m going to go get beyond the “I should…” and onto the “I did listen again”. 🙂 Thank you for the reminder about being faithful to pass the baton, and not becoming weary in well doing. (That’s one of my favorite Bible verses, BTW!)

Blessings to you, Kelly.

Enjoy them again! You’re an inspiration. I need to go back and listen again too.

I very much agree. I’ve already seen my daughter’s faith and relationship with Christ change her friends. I cannot wait to see what awesomeness is in store for her future and all those who are being raised with Christ as center. I really wish I had that beginning, but I am so grateful she gets it as will her children and their children, should the Lord tarry!
