Overwhelmed at this Privilege of Motherhood

by Kelly Crawford

Sometimes I get overwhelmed with what others may see as a simple thought, while I experience it as a burning, profound revelation. Such an occurrence happened yesterday, spurred by something our pastor said in the middle of the sermon, and I jotted my thoughts down…

“How could not the station of Motherhood–the very utterance of the word, evoke such wonder, such awe, such honor, as to render every human in its hearing speechless!

For my very ability to hear the word, to ponder its meaning, exists only because I was given birth…by a mother…brought into the world through a serious of events so miraculous, not even science can explain it.

What a privilege! What incredible prestige that God gave ME, a woman, the special office of bringing new life into the world! Despite sickness, discomfort and pain, I, a mother, ultimately get to embrace the overwhelming honor of ushering forth a human being into this world, a new, fresh life, perpetuating the very existence of civilization! What other occupation can even hint of boasting so great a duty!

(Lord, I must pray for humility as I ponder what an awesome position I hold!)

Surely, Lord, your heart breaks to see a disdainful glance thrown at a mother…surely you grieve at every comment not loaded with jubilation, spoken of an expectant mother! Let me renounce the world’s hatred of your precious gift of children…your tender office of motherhood, and your sacred calling of bringing forth and nurturing the next generation. May I render to every mother due honor and reverence…may I boldly stand in the breach between our culture’s condescension of motherhood and Your elevation of it, lifting up every mother as she faithfully wages war against our enemy.

You could have sent your Son triumphantly into our world, riding a white steed, and waving His mighty weapons of battle…but you chose to send the King of the universe to us through a Mother. Let the volume of that message resound in our hearts.

Amen, Kelly… I feel like I am struck by this more and more as I navigate having adult children along with teens, preteens, school-age, and now a toddler. As crazy as big family life is, what a precious gift we have been given to mother these eternal souls.❤️❤️❤️
