How to Help Your Children Become Entrepreneurs and a Give Away!

by Kelly Crawford

Since we’re on the subject of entrepreneurship, I wanted to answer a common question:

“How do I practically encourage my children to be entrepreneur-minded?”

Several ways.

  • They are more likely to be interested in home business if their parents are. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you must run a full-operating home business for your children to want to.  You can, at any time, pursue various ways to help with the family income.  America provides opportunities like no other place to make money from home.  I told the story in Finding Financial Freedom of how one sparse fall my children and I made a gazillion pies and took them door-to-door for sale.  We made a little money, but the spark it created in them was probably more profitable.
  • Teach them a biblical view of money and time. I believe it is not the Christian’s goal to build wealth, though that could and does happen.  But wealth is not our pursuit.  (Jesus said, “It is hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven”.…the truth is, we’re already rich, compared to the world’s population.)  We are commanded to be good stewards of all our resources, including our money and time.  Entrepreneurship gives us more control over these things and thus allows us to better serve the Kingdom if our priority remains to “Seek it first”.
  • Equip them with different skills. Every home business is born out of a skill and a love for something.  People have found ways to make money just about every way under the sun.  I spoke with a man last week whose friend makes a hefty living because he created an official status for the game of Dodgeball, complete with the official ball and rulebook.  Who would have thought?  In as much as is possible, I think we need to be looking for ways to expand the skills and interests of our children, feeling them out until they land upon something, or several somethings, that could grow into either a business, a ministry, or hopefully both.

Which brings me to the exciting give away!!!  Kathy Brodock oozes with talent.  She is always surprising me with yet another of her many skills.

I am giving away 1 each of her DVD sets:   Basic Crochet and Basic Cake Decorating. She JUST finished How to Make a Patchwork Quilt, by the way, so be sure to take a look at that.  These DVDs would make fabulous Christmas gifts for anyone!  And just think about the savings to learn a skill like this compared to what you would pay for a class!

So, are you ready to enter?  Here are the rules–brace yourself.  Leave a comment. That’s it.  Oh, and if you send a friend to leave a comment (make sure they tell me that you sent them), I’ll enter your name again up to 3 times.

The contest begins now, and will end Friday at 8:00 p.m.  I will try to announce the winners by Saturday morning some time.

Thanks for the chance to win a DVD. I am a slow learner so having something like this might be an advantage, a DVD won’t call me “challenged”. I love you site, thanks for taking the time to write on it.

Chelsey November 4, 2009 - 8:33 am

Awesome giveaway Kelly! Thank you for the opportunity!

Andrea November 4, 2009 - 8:51 am

Kelly,

Oh, yeah! Free giveaway!
I made a comment yesterday on how my husband had started his business about a year and a half ago.
We have also seen our children in the last year and a half start some businesses and also start gearing up for some others.

Our boys started a lawn business and have done pretty well. They have also been able to help out some elderly ladies in the neighborhood with severely discounted snow shoveling 🙂 Now is the time for your children to get out there and get some “contracts” for next year. Sometimes they even just do weeding for larger lawns. Even younger ones can handle this with some help from olders.

My daughter has started a photography business. Of course, you need some better equipment, but she was able to do that and has started taking pictures of families, etc. She has even been asked to do a wedding in June.

We also have some other things in the works too.

Thanks for all of the encouraging posts of entrepreneurship!

Cheri November 4, 2009 - 10:07 am

I was looking at buying this for my Daughter! Thanks for the giveaway! I love this post, and since neither of my teenage boys could find a job this past summer (even fast food) this is really speaking to me….Thanks for the inspiration.

We would love to own a copy of the crochet DVD! We already own the cake decorating DVD and absolutely love it! In fact, as I am typing this, my daughter (13yo) is behind me decorating a cake that my mom is buying from her to sell at a bake sale. This would make a lovely gift for a friend.

angel November 4, 2009 - 11:43 am

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us!

Kelly L November 4, 2009 - 11:43 am

I think it is so sweet that you are doing this giveaway and encouraging business ownership. Although don’t enter me. I am already a little too crazy on cakes for my own good, and would rather stab myself with a crochet needle than learn…isn’t that sad? I’m just being honest!

marcieh hadley November 4, 2009 - 11:48 am

Hi Kelly,
I like the the story of baking and selling pies door to door! The spark that lit my daughter was visiting arts and craft stores in Gatlinburg. She saw people doing what they enjoyed, and their pets were with them. 🙂

marcieh hadley November 4, 2009 - 11:54 am

Hi Kelly,
Don’t enter me twice, but I would mind emailing me? I would like to get some of your soap but all my email addresses were lost in a crash last week.

Rachel Falaschi November 4, 2009 - 12:08 pm

I would love the cake decorating dvd!

Gretchen November 4, 2009 - 12:14 pm

Mrs. Santos November 4, 2009 - 12:21 pm

Thanks for the opportunity ~ please enter me in the contest. We are working on a Christmas Tree farm this winter…I can’t wait to see how it affects my three littles as they will be very needed just to keep things going.

Love to you and yours,
Mrs. Santos

Christie November 4, 2009 - 1:43 pm

Perfect! I’ve been teaching myself crochet fro the past 6 weeks! As a full-time working mother, though, all I’ve been able to do is make one sample square of single crochet. But i’m about ready to finish that square and make a sample of double crochet or maybe Afghan stitch (if I can find a good set of online directions, that is!) Christie

My kids are 15, 12, 10, 7, & 4. I am in earnest to set them each up with a business that can be done from home. Love your blog!

Julesfromhome November 4, 2009 - 4:32 pm

I am the homeschooling mom of 6 children 8 and under with another due in June. Your blog is one of the only ones I speed read when I can. I love the idea of making money from home with the children, my question is, “How do you find the time?” Have you done any posts on time management or just how to get it all done. I barely have time to Ebay anymore. Also, I loved your posts on your natural childbirth experience. Too funny! My past 4 have been drug free and induced. Right around transition, I wish I had gone for the drugs 🙂 Thanks for your great blog.

Jeanette November 4, 2009 - 5:03 pm

I love reading your blog when I get the chance. Hope your family is well.

I’m up for a give-away! Thanks Kelly

Angela Cribb November 4, 2009 - 9:13 pm

For a while, I taught Spanish to homeschoolers in my home. This year, I was offered a position teaching at a co-op twice a month. I only work those 2 days each month and it covers my homeschool expenses. As a bonus, my child is able to participate in the co-op and she loves it. So really, any skill you have can be turned into making money.

I would love to have the cake decorating DVD. I already have the crochet. Thanks Kelly!

wordwarrior November 4, 2009 - 9:26 pm

Heather–I’ll check on shipping, it should be fine.

Mary R November 4, 2009 - 9:35 pm

Kelly, I appreciate your series on family entrepreneurship. It is so out of my way of thinking !! It gave me a “ahh” moment.Thanks.
Please enter me for the giveaway.

Beth M. November 4, 2009 - 10:34 pm

I would love the cake decorating DVD! I’ve done a little bit of decorating, but I don’t really know what I’m doing.

I don’t need the crocheting DVD… I’ve been crocheting for years.

Brandi November 4, 2009 - 10:36 pm

Kathy’s blog has actually inspired an idea for a small side business for our family. We ordered the plans for the hen house her husband built, and are in the process of building one for ouselves. We think these would sell in our area. Our wheels are always turning.

BTW, would love to become better at crocheting. ;o)

Many blessings~Brandi

Tami Lewis November 4, 2009 - 11:05 pm

Please enter me in the contest. My grandma taught me how to crochet when I was 8, but I tried teaching my 6yr. old and can’t remember. My kids love to help in the kitchen, so the cake decorating one would be great, too. Thank you

Kris November 5, 2009 - 12:13 am

My daughter just told me last week that she’d like to learn to decorate cakes. 🙂

Jen C November 5, 2009 - 1:09 am

I nearly fell over backwards when I saw your contest! I live in Australia so I don’t usually bother with contests but I just had to give myself chance. I am desperate to learn cake decorating (I want to be able to bless young christian couples) and I am trying to learn to crotchet (I’ve learnt to chain and single crochet so far)!!!
Thank you for the oppurtunity!

Thank you for the encouragement, Kelly. My oldest daughter has been baking and selling bread for several years to fund her mission trips, and now my 8 year old has caught the inspiration and started her own baking business, hoping to go on her first international mission trip next fall. She is baking homemade “from scratch” brownies and making granola and trail mix. So proud of them both!

Wendi November 6, 2009 - 11:13 am

oooh enter me 🙂
quick question as well- do you have to have a food handlers license to sell food door to door, such a great idea about the pies, im thinking about giving it a go with my kids!

Lori November 6, 2009 - 12:50 pm

Hello,

My daughter and I just quilted some Christmas Stockings last week-end for fun….we both have some crochet skills ( could use more!) and I decorate cakes….it’s been a few years since I’ve done a wedding cake. Fun contest.

Jenny November 6, 2009 - 1:45 pm

Cake decorating has eluded, thus far. A video is a great idea-I don’t have time to take one of the classes at the craft store 🙂

Ginny November 6, 2009 - 2:06 pm

I would love these dvds! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your heart with us on your blog. I have learned so much from you.

Word Warrior November 6, 2009 - 3:04 pm

Wendi,

Probably, as it seems you must be regulated to just about everything 😉 But our good ‘ol neighbors were just thrilled to have homemade pies, so I didn’t bother to check.

Linda November 6, 2009 - 4:32 pm

Kelly,
I have enjoyed your inspirational, though-provoking blog for some time. Please include me in the contest, as my 2 daughters would love to learn both these skills – thanks!

Wendi November 6, 2009 - 7:19 pm

kelly-
I’ll bet they were thrilled, everyone loves pie! lol you’ve inspired me, and although pies aren’t my forte i might try selling my pumpkin rolls door to door. Thanks for the post!

Amy November 6, 2009 - 7:26 pm

I would love to get any of Kathy’s DVD’s they look amazing.

Amy November 6, 2009 - 7:27 pm

The cake decorating and Crocheting DVD’s are the ones I’m thinking of giving away as gifts.

Word Warrior November 6, 2009 - 7:57 pm

Oh, and a hint about selling baked goods…in addition to door to door, we hit the offices in town (board of education 😉 and court house) where lots of busy women work. We took samples of our food, and they not only bought us out, but were asking if we would be coming back around before Christmas because they wanted to order desserts to take to all their gatherings.
