God is Mighty to Save–All is Not Lost

by Kelly Crawford

I’m writing from a friend’s computer, at another friend’s home.  My home is gone.  But, God saved my family from a violent tornado that ripped our house from off the top of us as we clung to each other, with three other families, in our basement.

I beg you for your prayers for our community.  It is totally devastated.  Our homes are literally flat, trees are uprooted everywhere–it is unrecognizable.  (We live on the same property as my parents and their home is gone too.)  But much worse, some of our close friends (the Lee Family) were all trapped under their collapsed house; our guys pulled them from the wreckage but their father was killed.  Three others were injured and unable to get to a hospital for hours (Med Flight finally arrived).  Sherry is left to try to make impossible decisions without a husband while trying to comfort her thirteen children too.

We are all rather numb, confused, at a real loss, trying to survive the hour, just attempting to do the next thing.

There is only one thing I know…my God is faithful, gracious and mighty to save.  Underneath all the destruction there is a brewing peace that things are going to be OK because of the God I serve.  Even while the roads were still blocked, friends, church family and people from all over started pouring in–walking miles through the treacherous darkness and debris to bring in supplies–food, blankets, generators–people even from other states.  I am overwhelmed.

Thank you so much for your prayers.

P.S.  The morning of the tornado (Wed.) my mom and I drove my Dad to the ER as he had a heart attack.  Again, God proved mighty and merciful and his life was spared, though he spent the first 30 minutes there telling us his goodbyes. Until you have felt that helplessness, it’s hard to fathom. We had only been home a few hours before the tornado struck.

I’m so sorry y’all are having to go through this. I’ve been through the exact same thing (the May 3rd, 1999 tornado that ripped through the middle of Oklahoma), only as an 8th grader instead of having to deal with it as an adult. I remember how stressed my parents were. The silver lining is, God will be able to teach your family so much through this, if you let Him. But I know that doesn’t necessarily help you right now. I’m so glad your community and church are banding together; that makes all the difference in the world in going through something like this. I’m so glad God spared your family members, and I will pray for your family and for your friends who lost their husband and father. I cannot imagine their pain.

We are praying for your family, the Lee family, and others we know there who are in the midst of this tragedy. May the Lord strengthen you and fill you with HIS peace. I can’t believe everything is gone. Great memories of even your home (where my wedding rehearsal dinner was held) and the home/barn that was destroyed where the Lees lived where I lived for almost 2 years before I got married. Praying for everyone!

Praising the Lord that you are safe. Also, so sorry about your father…will continue to pray for him as well. Yes, our God is mighty to save.

Psalm 27:4-5
One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle
and set me high upon a rock.

If you know of a way we can help your friends the Lee family, please let us know.
I pray that you will all have peace during this time, and find comfort in the fact that no storm can take you away from Gods love.

I am SO extremely heartbroken for you and your family, and NOW for your friends too! I just can only imagine what this must be like for you all! My heart has been heavy with sadness and love for you all this morning. You have been SUCH a HUGE blessing to me through your blog – and even though I don’t know you and you dont know me, I feel like you are a close friend – and this is affecting my heart just as it would if this had happened to one of my close friends. My children and I have been praying a lot for you this morning, and discussing ways we can help your family. And now your friends too! We want to do all we can to help you guys. I am going to be spreading the word on my blog in addition to other ways to raise money for you! You are such a blessing to me, and I know God is leading me to be a blessing to you through this difficult time in your life. I know that your home is not only your home, but also basically your income! And not only have you lost your home, but also your means for income. God is so good, and so awesome, and I know even through this tragedy is showing Himself to you in amazing ways. I know and believe He will provide for you in ways you might not even be able to imagine right now. He has always amazed me with His care for me through tragedy, through heartache, through loss, through provision, and I trust and know He will do, and is dong this for you!

Love in Christ,

I know what you mean, God is so good. Our family is safe (we’re to the south of Bham), but we know of others who have lost family and loved ones through this horrible thing. The children are so scared, and asking fearful questions. We grownups are just numb. Grateful, but numb. Yesterday it was impossible to imagine what awaited us this morning.

Sometimes we do not always know how to connect all the dots and it is hard for our “carnal mind” to understand the why and the how things come and happen but I Thessalonians 5:18 ” In every thing give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Lifting you and your family up in prayer and giving God thanksgiving prayers for his protection over you and your family. Matt 6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you….He is also the restoration of our life and all within in it. God bless you and yours

Kelly,

My 2 older girls stayed with you in your house while in town for a wedding. To know that your house is gone is more personal to us because of that. We have friends on the ground there trying to help however they can. That makes this more personal to us, even though we are a couple of states away.

Our prayers and thoughts are with you. What joy to know that God is walking through this with you.

My heart and prayers are with the Lee Family. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord. God knew the days ordained for Tom Lee. As hard as this time is for the Lee Family, how blessed to know that God is walking with them too through this valley of the shadow of death. Not to mention the prayers and hands and feet of God’s people.

Praying,
Laralee for the Seargeant Family

I am so sorry for all you have lost, and *I* am encouraged by the words of faith you and your husband have expressed in the midst of it. This is very hard! My prayer for you in all of it is, and will continue to be, that God will use you in a mighty way to show the light of His love and grace to many hurting people around you. I am also asking for His strength to be perfected in your weakness. I know that as the weeks and months go by, you will have many stories of God’s help during these days, and He will be glorified in it all.

We heard news of your family, and the Lees, through Doug Phillips at Vision Forum yesterday. We have been praying. Thank you for your encouraging comments concerning God’s perfect sovereignty. This is “easy” for us to declare as we stand afar and feel sorrow for your losses. I cannot imagine being in the middle of such devastation. As I mentioned on my blog, our tornado from last week here in St. Louis seemed devastating at the time, although we were not personally affected. While I continue to feel for those who lost all possessions here, I realize that the fact that no one was killed reveals the “mildness” of the storm as compared to those which ripped through your state. We are eagerly awaiting news from the Vision Forum website delineating measures we can take to help. May God use the faith He has given you to strengthen many more.

Living in Michigan we have our rugged weather but none like you have had. I think about the supper you served me in February in your home and this seems unreal.
I am sending some help but wish I could be there. I have so many pioneer skills for this type happening.

Kelly, I will pray for your family. God is merciful and beyond faithful. I pray that He sends much help and comfort to all affected.

Oh dear God. Oh Kelly, I’m so sorry. I must not have paid attention to the beginning of this post enough, because I thought this post was from one of your friends using YOUR computer. Of course, that would be just as awful, but my God, I had no idea it was you. To have lost your home, your large family without its beautiful home; this is literally my worst nigthmare (other than losing family). I’m so sorry. I’ll see what I can do.

Just finished the post in its entirety; that poor Lee family! They have my prayers. And your father’s trauma, in the same day. I can’t imagine how shaken up you all were.

Dear Kelly and family,
I don’t know you personally, but I’m horrified to see what happened to your home. Praise God you live… we pray for you! May God give you strength and dry your tears (and those of other stricken families). You were spared… you still have a work to do in this life. To praise Him, as you do.

Psalms 116:8  For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.
9  I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living…
12  What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?
13  I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.
14  I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.
15  Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
16  O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
17  I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.
18  I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,
19  In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.

Oh, dear Mrs. Crawford, I am so, so sorry for your loss!!! I can’t even find the words to say. It really puts things into perspective….we’ve been out of power sinse Wednesday and will likely not have any power again until 4-7 more days from now. But, how that pales in comparison to what y’all have gone through. There are countless homes just miles down the road from us that are in the same condition as yours. Please know that you are in our prayers, and know that the Lord has promised to bring good from this. Your example of trust, faith, and comfort in Christ in a time like this is an amazing encouragement. Always know that He is with you, will never leave you nor forsake you, and will help and provide for you beyond anything you could ask or think.

You are in our prayers, dear Crawford family!!
Rebekah

I first learned of your loss yesterday and will be praying for you, your family, and all those whose lives were touched by the tornado. We serve a great God and He will see you through this. I know you are praising the Lord for His merciful goodness in sparing your loved ones. “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever” Dan 12:3

Your website was shared with me by a good friend. We are also in an area that was struck by the tornadoes, but thankfully we only had trees knocked down around us. I am praying for your family and you begin to recover and rebuild your life. But I wanted to tell you that your “title” of this post really stuck out to me because it is what the title to my pastor’s (who is also my bro-in-law) message was yesterday…”All is Not Lost”. God has his hand on your family…we will be praying for you!

I am praying for you and your family, town, and also the Lee Family. Our God is an awesome God and will help you through this. I learned of you and the Lee’s through the “His Heartbeat For Women” email newsletter. I will be watching both your site and theirs and continuing to pray for all of you. I am in Arizona and there’s not a lot of physical help I can offer from here but if someone wanted to send a care package where could they send it? If you posted a mailing address maybe some handmade things could be sent your way to comfort all of you. Please allow some of us to do that for you and your town. Please allow the “hands of Christ” so do something. Many thanks. God be with you. Cindy Owen, Taylor, AZ

My heart is with you and your family as well as your loved ones. I echo your decree, “Our God is mighty to save!” In 2005 our family went through hurricaine Katrina. The following Sunday as I stood in church in St. Louis, MO with my family I was overcome with the words to the worship song. “Blessed be the name of the Lord…You give and take away, still my heart will choose to say, blessed be the name of the Lord.” Although I knew all that we had was lost I can honestly say that pure joy filled my heart at that moment. My God had not forgotten me. His promises are eternal. If He provided for the sparrows and the lillies of the field, He would also provide for me and my family. I will stand in agreement with you that God will provide as well as allow your light to shine even brighter in the community around you at this time! Hold fast to the words of Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, ” declares the lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Love in Christ,
Carolyn
